Simplicity Made Difficult

چکیده

In their new book Relativism and Monadic Truth, Herman Cappelen and John Hawthorne seek to defend a " mainstream " view of the contents of thought and talk, which they call Simplicity, against recent " analytic relativist " here-says (including my own). Simplicity consists in five theses: T1 There are propositions and they instantiate the fundamental monadic properties of truth simpliciter and falsity sim-pliciter. T2 The semantic values of declarative sentences relative to contexts of utterance are propositions. T4 Propositions are the objects of illocutionary acts; they are, e.g., what we assert and deny. T5 Propositions are the objects of agreement and disagreement. (1) The real locus of dispute, though, must be T1. After all, analytic relativists tend to accept T3, T4, and T5. 1 T2 is a technical claim; whether it is correct is a matter of what sorts of abstract objects it is most useful to assign to embedded occurrences of sentences in a compositional semantic theory. There 1 It is not clear to me what T5 comes to, exactly. If it means that people can disagree about whether p, where p is a proposition, then I know of no relativist who would reject it.

a being of the simplest essence’ ‘ The principle of

The principle of ‘a being of the simplest essence’, basitulhaqiqah, is one of the most important one in transcendent philosophy upon which has been based the solution of many complicated and difficult problems. Now a question appears as: can the principle form a proof for the simplicity of the Necessary? In the paper, the principle has been analyzed and its background presented. Then it has ...

Simplicity, Truth, and Probability

Simplicity has long been recognized as an apparent mark of truth in science, but it is difficult to explain why simplicity should be accorded such weight. This chapter examines some standard, statistical explanations of the role of simplicity in scientific method and argues that none of them explains, without circularity, how a reliance on simplicity could be conducive to finding true models or...

On God and Mann: a View of Divine Simplicity

One of the most difficult and perplexing tenets of classical theism is the doctrine of divine simplicity. Broadly put, this is generally understood to be the thesis that God is altogether without any proper parts, composition, or metaphysical complexity whatsoever. For a good deal more than a millennium, veritable armies ofphilosophical theologians Jewish, Christian and Islamic proclaimed the t...

Hands for dexterous manipulation and robust grasping: a difficult road toward simplicity

In this paper, an attempt at summarizing the evolution and the state of the art in the field of robot hands is made. In such exposition, a critical evaluation of what in the author’s view are the leading ideas and emerging trends is privileged with respect to exhaustiveness of citations. The survey is focused mainly on three types of functional requirements a machine hand can be assigned in an ...

Distribution-theoretic methods in quantum field theory

SOM E HI S T OR Y . Singular generalized functions had been emerging in various applications (recall Dirac’s δ -function). Sobolev [1] found a systematic way to define such generalized functions as linear functionals on suitably chosen spaces of test functions. The most universally useful variant of the theory was suggested by Schwartz [2] (the so-called distributions; I will use the term inter...
